ON VIOLENCE

Who gets to define violence? 

Knife Play is the game society plays where whoever holds the knife holds the power. Whoever’s in power gets to define violence: who’s allowed to be victims and who gets to shirk the responsibility of perpetrator. 

People in power define morality. The concept of objective morality is a wool they throw over our eyes. It is what chains us. 

Religious and cultural taboos infuse sexuality with shame. Moral panic asks us to repress ourselves and leads to transgressions in private.

Maybe this is why I find sin ethical. 

There’s a fascination we all have with violence. It is the letters that make up a lot of society. Though it’s not new, it has shifted. 

Violence has become more normalized, especially in American society, while sex has become increasingly taboo. School shootings, gore in movies and violent video games are common and normal. Yet gay rights and women’s rights are being stripped away. Sex work is still illegal, yet majority of young people have an OnlyFans subscription. And at the next Republican Convention, all of the closeted gay republicans are gonna crash grinder, again.

We’ve been sold a lie. Power is for those who take it. Dominion over weaker beings. Patriarchy. But also- this is just how it works and how it has always worked. Keep your head down and carry on. Don’t inflict violence upon the violent. They are in fact not violent. This is not what you see. Ceci n’est pas une pipe.

If we take them for their word, they should all be dead a hundred times over by now. Dragged into the streets. Let them eat cake. Et tu Brutus? The crowd’s been primed to want blood. But this isn’t how they got here. It was through quiet strategy, bravado and snake oil. Somehow we’re still falling for it. Since that’s the language they speak. The language we’ve learned. And yet, we’re still obedient.

We’re as cucked as they are castrated.
